Planting a native Hedge
Here are a few reasons why you might want to plant a native hedge.
1. To create a boundary for privacy.
2. Shelter from prevalling winds.
3. To prevent livestock ie. cattle or horses from coming into your garden.
4. The establishment of a habitat for birds, insects and other wildlife.
The main plant used in native hedgerows is Hawthorn or Whitethorn, ( crataegus monogyna ).
This plant can be seen through out the countryside, with white flowers in May followed by crops of red berries in autumn.
Hawthorn makes an excellent hedge and can be pruned and shaped or allowed develop an informal look. The white flowers provide nectar for bees in Spring and the berries are a food source for birds in Autumn and Winter.
Other native species can also be used for hedging such as Holly, Fuscia, Field maple, Hazel, Guilder rose, Blackthorn and Crab apple.
A native mixed hedge containing some of these species is an excellent idea, with different plants flowering at varing times of the year. Here the predominant species should be Hawthorn tree, with other species planted through the hedge. Advice on selection in a mixed hedge is needed in considering suitability.
