The alders are a group of trees which will grow in almost any soil except a shallow chalk site. They are particularly suited to damp locations with alnus cordata and alnus glutinosa being very lime tolerant.

Alnus Cordata – Italian Alder
An excellent medium to large conical tree for all soil types. It produces bright green glistening foliage.
Alnus Glutinosa – Common Alder
A small to medium sized tree with sticky young growths and yellow catkins in March.
Alnus Incana – Grey Alder
An exceptionally hardy tree with grey beneath the leaves. Ideally suited to cold wet areas.
